Panthers Secure Jalen Coker with $35 Million Extension

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — The Carolina Panthers have reached an agreement with wide receiver Jalen Coker on a lucrative three-year contract extension worth $35 million, ensuring his place on the team through the 2019 season, as confirmed by a source familiar with the negotiations.

Panthers head coach Dave Canales expressed his confidence in Coker's abilities late last season, identifying him as the starting wide receiver for the future. This contract solidifies the Panthers' belief in Coker's potential and importance to the team's long-term plans. The source, who chose to remain anonymous, shared this information with The Associated Press prior to an official announcement.

While it is uncommon for teams to extend exclusive rights free agents, the Panthers were convinced that Coker is a key asset moving forward. In the previous season, he recorded 43 receptions for 394 yards and three touchdowns, despite missing the first month due to an injury. His performance improved significantly as the season progressed, ultimately leading to his promotion in the starting lineup, where he took over from Xavier Legette, the team's first-round pick in 2024, joining last year’s AP Offensive Rookie of the Year, Tetairoa McMillan.

Coker also showcased his skills in the NFC wild-card playoff game against the Los Angeles Rams, where he had an impressive outing with nine catches for 124 yards and a touchdown.

Coming out of high school, Coker was not heavily recruited by major Division I programs and chose to attend Holy Cross, where he made a commitment to his mother to stay and complete his education. Over his four years at Holy Cross, he accumulated 163 receptions for 2,684 yards and a record-setting 31 touchdowns.
