Pine Forest Track Stars Blanks and Gee Commit to Collegiate Athletics
Pine Forest High School's boys track and field head coach, Shaun Harris, humorously remarked that this spring could have been his final season if not for the achievements of two standout athletes by his side. Seniors Anthony Gee and Darian Blanks both signed with their respective colleges on June 1, taking the next step in their athletic careers. Gee is set to join the University of Houston, while Blanks will continue at Meridian Community College.
Gee recently made headlines by clinching the 3A state championship in the 400-meter hurdles on May 8, where he also secured a third-place finish in the 110-meter hurdles. He holds the Pine Forest records for both events. Blanks, who recently relocated from the Chicago area, excelled in his lone season with the Eagles, capturing third place in the triple jump and also setting a new school record. Additionally, he placed ninth in the long jump, an event he had not previously competed in.
Reflecting on Gee's impressive performance at the state championships, assistant coach Sawyer Whatley praised his impact on the team, stating, “You inspired a lot of the guys and that’s been awesome to see. The people coming behind you, they want that record and that’s going to push them.”
Before his breakthrough at the state meet, Gee was uncertain about his future in athletics, focusing instead on obtaining a commercial driver's license and pursuing day trading. His fortunes changed dramatically when he shattered his previous personal best in the 400-meter hurdles, clocking in at 52.18 seconds. This impressive feat garnered attention from college coaches, including Carl Lewis, the legendary nine-time Olympic gold medalist and head coach at Houston.
Blanks' journey to collegiate athletics was not as straightforward. Initially drawn to track to enhance his football skills, he developed a passion for the sport despite lacking formal coaching. After moving to Florida, he faced challenges with academic eligibility and injuries but eventually excelled in the triple jump, setting a school record of 49 feet, 1 inch. He plans to spend a year at Meridian Community College before transferring to a four-year university.
Both athletes have demonstrated exceptional dedication and resilience, paving the way for their continued success in track and field.
