Pochettino Lauds Messi and Argentina's World Cup Brilliance
SEATTLE — While Mauricio Pochettino is committed to guiding the U.S. men's national soccer team, his roots in Argentina remain strong. When asked about Lionel Messi and Argentina's impressive World Cup journey, Pochettino couldn't hide his delight, especially after Messi's remarkable hat trick during a 3-0 victory over Algeria on June 16, marking a significant milestone in his World Cup career.
The three goals scored by Messi on that day brought his total to 16 in World Cup matches, equaling the record held by Germany's Miroslav Klose. "I really enjoyed the performance of Argentina," Pochettino remarked on June 18. He continued, "It’s difficult to describe Messi. Six World Cups, all that he achieved in his career. In different clubs. In a collective and individual way," before pausing to add, "He’s the best."
Pochettino, who hails from Argentina and played for the national team in the 2002 World Cup, previously managed Messi at Paris Saint-Germain. His connection to the Argentine squad remains strong, as he referred to their coach, Luis Scaloni, as "the best" in the tournament. "They won the World Cup four years ago," he noted. "The coaching staff I know well. The fans are amazing. And then with the cherry (on top), Messi. It's a difficult combination to play against."
Despite his admiration for his homeland, Pochettino made it clear that his focus is fully on the U.S. team. "I am Argentine. But I am defending USA," he stated emphatically. "I’m going to give everything I have to create good memories here." The USMNT is set to face Australia on June 19, while Argentina will take on Austria on June 22.
