Presenter Resigns After Misreporting Messi Family Health Crisis
An Argentine television host has stepped down following a false report regarding the health of Lionel Messi's father during a live broadcast. Florencia Pena made the erroneous announcement while presenting on Luzu TV, shortly after Argentina's victory over Algeria in their opening World Cup match.
The Messi family later released a statement confirming that Jorge Messi, Lionel's father, is currently receiving treatment for an undisclosed health issue. They emphasized that the 68-year-old is stable and recovering, while also condemning the rampant speculation about his condition and requesting privacy during this challenging time.
Pena publicly apologized, expressing her regret over the incident and explaining that she had received the incorrect information live on air, mistakenly believing it to be verified. "I take responsibility for being part of the mistake," she stated in her social media post, which followed her decision to resign from Luzu TV.
The channel also issued an apology and announced it was taking disciplinary measures against those involved in the incident. Nicolas Occhiato, the host and producer of the program, stated, "For our channel, the broadcast of sensitive information without proper prior verification is unacceptable." This incident has drawn sharp criticism across Argentina, including from President Javier Milei, who labeled the report as "trash talk" and highlighted the irresponsibility of disseminating such unverified information.
As Argentina prepares for their next World Cup match against Austria, the controversy serves as a reminder of the importance of responsible journalism.
