Ravens' Offensive Coordinator Declan Doyle Generates Early Excitement During OTAs
Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Declan Doyle has garnered significant attention from coaches and players alike following the team’s recent OTA session. As the Ravens work on their offensive strategies, Doyle's fresh approach is making a notable impact.
After the appointment of new head coach Jesse Minter, the focus shifted to finding the right leader for the team’s offensive unit. In a surprising move, Minter chose Doyle, previously the offensive coordinator for the Chicago Bears, who had worked under renowned coach Ben Johnson. Doyle’s decision to move to Baltimore, despite his success in Chicago, was driven by the opportunity to take charge of the offense and utilize a talented roster.
The 30-year-old Doyle, notably the youngest offensive coordinator currently in the NFL, is already impressing with his coaching acumen. Ravens defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver praised Doyle’s sharp intellect, likening him to a "human computer." Weaver remarked, “He’s got like a rolodex of plays in his head… Anytime that’s happening, you know they’re doing something right on that side of the ball.”
Doyle is pushing his players to adapt quickly to the new offensive scheme, emphasizing the importance of overcoming challenges to foster growth. “We need to stress them, we need to figure out what they can handle,” he said, highlighting his commitment to making the offense difficult to defend.
Quarterback Lamar Jackson is excited about collaborating with Doyle, noting that their relationship is continuously developing. Wide receiver Zay Flowers echoed this enthusiasm, stating, “He ain’t playing, but he’s a dawg… He wants the offense to be the best offense in the league.”
With such a strong start to his tenure, Doyle's future appears bright. Johnson, who previously worked with Doyle, expressed disappointment over losing him so soon, stating, “Declan’s a phenomenal football coach… Those guys are getting someone really really good.” If Doyle's early success continues, he may soon attract interest from teams looking for head coaches, potentially following in the footsteps of other young coaching talents in the league.
