Rich Beem baffled after seeing picture of Bryson DeChambeau’s five iron online

Bryson DeChambeau endured a torrid time at the PGA Championship, appearing totally out of his depth at this difficult setup.

He must have explored every inch of Aronimink after his disastrous ball striking performance saw him everywhere but the middle of the fairway throughout his two rounds.

DeChambeau’s iron play and chipping were particularly poor, which is a trend that has carried on from his missed cut at The Masters. His same-length irons have given him serious problems when facing uneven lies, which are frequent at Aronimink and Augusta.

2002 PGA Championship winner Rich Beem said he noticed something “perplexing” about DeChambeau’s irons after seeing a picture of them online.

What Rich Beem noticed about Bryson DeChambeau’s irons

DeChambeau is famous for his same-length irons, as his wedge is the same length as his six-iron. According to DeChambeau, that allows him to make a repeatable swing every time, but it also seems to take the control away from his wedges in particular.

Speaking on Sky Sports commentary, Beem said he noticed something particularly odd about DeChambeau’s irons.

He said, “It’s perplexing because if you look at some of the things on social media, they have a view of his five iron and it looks like all the wear marks are out of the toe.

“Just the way he swings it and brings it from the inside, you have to clean that up.”

DeChambeau tends to suffer with a hooked miss to the left when he isn’t hitting his irons well, so if he’s always hitting it off the toe then that would explain that!

Bryson DeChambeau must end his irons experiment

Surely it’s time for DeChambeau to give up on his same-length irons experiment. This is now back-to-back awful displays at major championships, where his wedge play around the green is letting him down.

The very best minds in golf work day and night to design the best possible golf clubs, so now that we are a few years into DeChambeau’s experiment, would other manufacturers not have followed suit if this really was the way to go?

No other golfer has moved in this direction. DeChambeau really must feel that he’s just smarter than everyone else, or his ego is too big to allow him to admit he was wrong.

If he really wants to solve this issue, he must move back to traditional clubs. If he doesn’t expect more performances like this from DeChambeau.
