In a series of interviews on Thursday, Real Madrid presidential hopeful Enrique Riquelme made headlines with his ambitious plans for the club, asserting his intent to secure Manchester City stars Erling Haaland and Rodri. Speaking to both El Partidazo de COPE and Diario AS, Riquelme reiterated his commitment to these high-profile signings, stating, “If I’m president, Rodri and Haaland will play for Real Madrid.”
Riquelme acknowledged the challenges posed by Haaland's representatives, likening the situation to famous transfer negotiations in football history. “Haaland’s agent denying it? Well, it’s part of the game,” he remarked, emphasizing his confidence in delivering on his promises. He even pledged to cover the membership fees for all 100,000 members if he fails to fulfill his commitments.
Beyond player acquisitions, Riquelme shared insights into his prospective management team, confirming that iconic figures like Vicente del Bosque would join in an advisory capacity. “Vicente del Bosque will be part of our project in a completely selfless way,” Riquelme noted. Meanwhile, he confirmed that fellow legends Raúl González and Fernando Hierro are already collaborating on strategic decisions.
Additionally, Riquelme criticized the current administration for its financial practices, claiming there are significant savings to be made, particularly through an audit of the club’s accounts. He asserted that the club is overspending, especially on executive salaries and external consultants, and called for a reevaluation of its financial priorities.
Riquelme’s campaign also emphasizes protecting Real Madrid’s member-owned structure, advocating for reforms to enhance transparency and member engagement. His proposals include reducing membership fees and creating new opportunities for fans to participate in club affairs. As the election approaches, he appealed directly to the electorate, framing the upcoming vote as crucial for the club's future direction.
