Royals Pitcher Seth Lugo Departed After Taking 107 MPH Line Drive to the Head
Seth Lugo left the Kansas City Royals' matchup against the Texas Rangers after being hit in the head by a line drive in the fourth inning. The incident occurred while Lugo was delivering a 3-2 pitch to Brandon Nimmo, who struck a high change-up right back at the pitcher with an impressive exit velocity of 106.6 mph, as reported by the Rangers' broadcast.
Unable to evade the ball, Lugo was struck on the left side of his head and collapsed on the mound as the ball ricocheted into right field. Nimmo, visibly distressed, discarded his helmet and called for time as he reached first base, clearly concerned for his friend.
Following the incident, the Royals' medical staff promptly attended to Lugo, while Nimmo approached the mound to check on him. Reports indicate that Lugo reassured his former New York Mets teammate that he was alright, despite suffering a contusion on his forehead.
Though Lugo was able to walk to the dugout unaided, the Royals decided to substitute him for precautionary reasons, bringing in Mason Black to take over on the mound. The team has yet to issue an update regarding Lugo's status, but further information will be provided as it becomes available.
