The San Jose Sharks acquired Kiefer Sherwood in a trade from the Vancouver Canucks less than two months ago.
That's what made the rumors earlier this week particularly surprising -- the Sharks were reportedly considering trading Sherwood away before this Friday's deadline.
Why? Contract talks.
The Sharks knew when they got Sherwood that he was in the last year of his deal. They were just hoping to be able to extend him.
Once that looked less likely, Sherwood's name began to be floated in trade chatter.
Except now, Sherwood may actually be staying put.
NHL insider Frank Seravalli shared this on X on Wednesday morning:
"(Sharks) have made progress on contract extension talks with Kiefer Sherwood, as expected. Short of an unforeseen development, it’s unlikely that Sherwood is flipped between now and Friday’s deadline."

That would be good news in San Jose. Sherwood is a quality player, and keeping his experience around can only help the Sharks' young core.
Sherwood missed his first month with the Sharks due to an upper-body injury. He has played five games with the Sharks, including the four since returning from the Olympic break.
On Tuesday night, Sherwood finally got on the score sheet with a goal and an assist.
The Canucks got two second-round picks and AHL defenseman Cole Clayton for Sherwood.
Before the trade, he had played 44 games for the Canucks this season, tallying 17 goals, 6 assists and 210 hits.
It looks like things might work out in the end for San Jose, if they really can get an extension across the finish line.
