South Korea Enforces Media Blackout After Son Heung-min's Military Service Mockery

Reports indicate that South Korea's national football team has initiated a media blackout in response to derogatory comments made about captain Son Heung-min's military service. This decision follows the leak of footage capturing a conversation between two journalists, who made unflattering remarks during a practice session on June 7, just days before South Korea's 2-1 victory over the Czech Republic in Group A of the 2026 World Cup.

In South Korea, military service is mandatory for able-bodied men, lasting between 18 to 21 months, although exemptions can be granted to athletes who achieve significant accomplishments. Son, now 33, received an exemption for his role in securing a gold medal at the 2018 Asian Games but opted for alternative military duties, including a training course in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic. A notable player, Son previously starred for Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League before joining LAFC in Major League Soccer last summer. He has represented the South Korean national team 146 times since his debut in 2010.

The mocking footage was aired in South Korea, sparking considerable backlash, as reported by The Associated Press. Following the team’s World Cup opening match last Thursday, where Son had several scoring opportunities but did not convert, he chose not to engage with the media.

In light of the situation, the Korea Football Association issued a statement denouncing the "inappropriate remarks" from the media. “The Korea Football Association respects the reporting activities and the role of the media,” the statement emphasized. “However, on-site reporting must also be conducted based on mutual respect and trust, and respect for and protection of the players must take precedence.”

The association urged media representatives to exhibit greater sensitivity and responsibility toward the national team in order to avoid similar incidents in the future. South Korea is scheduled to face Mexico in their next match on Thursday in Guadalajara.
