During Lee Johnson's time as manager, Sunderland's defensive issues were frequently highlighted, with the team’s dynamic attacking play sometimes overshadowed by their frailties at the back. Among the various defenders who rotated through the squad, Dion Sanderson, who joined on loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers for the 2020-21 season, left a significant mark at the Stadium of Light. Despite dealing with injuries that limited him to 26 appearances, Sanderson quickly established himself as a key player.

Sanderson's natural athleticism bolstered Sunderland’s defense, showcasing his potential to perform at a higher level. Early in his loan, it became evident that the club would need promotion to retain his services. After a playoff defeat to Lincoln, which Sanderson missed due to injury, he expressed a desire to remain with Sunderland had they secured promotion.

Recognized as Sunderland’s Young Player of the Year, Sanderson attracted interest from Championship clubs, leading Wolverhampton to extend his contract. However, he was subsequently loaned out again to Birmingham City and QPR during the 2021-22 season. Following Sunderland's promotion, the club expressed strong interest in bringing Sanderson back to strengthen their defense, although he had gained several admirers after a successful season.

Reports from the Northern Echo indicated that Sanderson was Sunderland’s top defensive target, with Sheffield United also showing interest. The club remained optimistic due to Sanderson's previous positive experience with them and their willingness to explore both loan and permanent options. Despite their efforts, Sanderson opted for a move to Birmingham City in early July 2022, leading Sunderland to pursue alternative defensive options, which culminated in the signing of Dan Ballard from Arsenal. Sanderson, meanwhile, has struggled to find a stable environment, eventually joining Derby County on loan to start the 2025-26 season, later making the transfer permanent in January.
