Tampa Spartans Utilize Small Ball Strategy to Secure NCAA Division II Semifinal Spot
CARY, N.C. — In a time when traditional baseball tactics like bunting are often overlooked, the University of Tampa demonstrated their effectiveness in a critical moment of the NCAA Division II Baseball Championship tournament. The Spartans triumphed over Point Loma (California) with a score of 2-1 on Monday, advancing to the semifinals at the USA Baseball National Training Complex.
After the Spartans conceded a tying run due to a two-out error in the eighth, they swiftly employed small ball techniques to reclaim the lead. Jack Martinez reached base thanks to a throwing mistake, setting the stage for Jordan Evans to execute a flawless sacrifice bunt—his first of the season. Following Evans, Brayden Woodburn knocked in an RBI single, propelling the two-time defending champions closer to their third consecutive championship series.
With just one win needed to reach the finals again, the Spartans await their next opponent, which will either be Point Loma or Catawba (North Carolina). Coach Joe Urso emphasized the importance of gritty gameplay, stating, “Those are the types of games you’re going to have to win to win a World Series,” referring to the tightly contested matchup where both teams struggled to score.
The contest saw UT's B.J. Bailey and Point Loma’s Devin Norton engage in a pitcher’s duel, with Bailey showcasing his skills against a formidable lineup averaging .329 and boasting 75 home runs. The left-hander kept the Sea Lions to just four hits before running into trouble in the seventh, but the Spartans remained resilient despite a late-inning blunder that allowed Point Loma to tie the game.
Fikar, who played a pivotal role in the game, expressed his initial frustration over the error but quickly felt renewed confidence from his teammates. “I could just feel the energy, and I had a really good feeling that they were going to come right back and answer,” he remarked. The Spartans’ ability to stay composed under pressure proved essential as they closed out the game with Fikar retiring Point Loma in order during the ninth inning.
“We pride ourselves in relaxing and staying on an even keel in those late innings when others are feeling the pressure,” Urso added, highlighting his team's mental fortitude as a key to their success.
