Tennessee Baseball Bows Out Early in NCAA Tournament After Missed Opportunities
Tennessee's journey in the NCAA baseball tournament came to an abrupt end on May 30, as they fell 5-4 to VCU at Boshamer Stadium, mirroring the struggles faced in their previous game. A powerful offense that had shown promise during the latter part of the season failed to deliver when it counted, leading to their early exit from the Chapel Hill Regional. This loss followed a grueling 14-inning, 7-3 defeat to East Carolina the day before.
The Volunteers, who had previously made it to three of the last five College World Series under former coach Tony Vitello, could not muster a win in coach Josh Elander's inaugural season. With a season record of 38-22, their quick dismissal from the tournament was somewhat unexpected, but their inability to secure crucial hits proved detrimental.
Tennessee showcased their home run potential against both VCU and East Carolina, with Stone Lawless and Reese Chapman going deep against the Rams, while Blake Grimmer and Henry Ford homered in the earlier matchup. However, their clutch performance faltered, as the Vols finished 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position against VCU, and struck out 13 times against the opposing pitchers.
Pitcher Tegan Kuhns began strong, striking out five batters in the first two innings, but his effectiveness waned as the game progressed. Despite a brief visit from Elander and the team's trainer, Kuhns remained in the game until the fifth inning when he was replaced by Brady Frederick, who allowed two more runs. Freshman Cam Appenzeller, who had a stellar performance in relief earlier, might have been a better option for Elander in this crucial moment.
As the game unfolded, VCU's pitcher Zach Peters proved resilient, managing to fend off a late rally by the Vols despite allowing a walk in the ninth inning. Ultimately, Tennessee's offense fell short, scoring only seven runs over a total of 23 innings in the tournament, leaving no room for a potential Game 3.
