Ticket Prices for World Cup Skyrocket, Leaving Fans Disheartened
A devoted supporter of the World Cup has expressed that this year's event is the most financially burdensome he has ever experienced, with ticket costs soaring into the thousands on resale platforms. Sean Riskowitz, who relocated from South Africa to Society Hill, has been following World Cup matches since 2010. "It's very expensive," he remarked, having secured tickets for 13 games, including all six set to take place in Philadelphia.
Riskowitz ultimately opted to sell some of his tickets, noting that the most costly was for the opening match featuring Mexico and South Africa. "That ticket was $1,795 per ticket, and I managed to sell it to someone in Mexico for double that price," he explained. In contrast, he found the match between Ivory Coast and Curacao at Philadelphia Stadium to be the least expensive, priced at around $140. "I think the ticket prices are reflecting the market demand," he added.
According to TicketData.com, which monitors pricing on both primary and secondary markets, the priciest match in Philadelphia is scheduled for July 4, with initial prices starting at $1,100 and reaching an astonishing $20,000. Fans traveling from West London have voiced similar concerns about the high costs. "It's just ridiculous," stated Ted Bloomfield, while his companion Jed Macdonald described the pricing as "just a bit of a rip off to be honest."
StubHub has issued a reminder for buyers to be cautious and purchase only from verified sites that offer guarantees and payment protection, advising them to check seller ratings and confirm seat locations on venue maps. The company warns that if an offer seems too good to be true, it likely is. Many fans are lamenting the escalating prices, which they believe are excluding a broader audience. "It's unfair. It's unfortunate," said Julia Riskowitz of Society Hill. "Soccer is a game for the fans and for everyone, and it's a shame more people can't go."
Despite the steep costs, some attendees argue that the experience justifies the expense. "It is very expensive, but it's worth it for the memories, isn't it?" Bloomfield commented. Philadelphia's inaugural match is set for Sunday, featuring Ivory Coast against Ecuador at 7 p.m., with the lowest ticket available on StubHub for that game priced at approximately $900.
