Tommy Kahnle Returns to Red Sox Roster Ahead of Yankees Showdown

The Boston Red Sox have officially promoted 36-year-old reliever Tommy Kahnle from Triple-A Worcester just in time for their upcoming series against the New York Yankees, which kicks off on Friday.

Kahnle has been impressive in the minor leagues this season, posting a remarkable 1.40 ERA over 18 appearances. Earlier this week, he opted out of his minor league contract, prompting the Red Sox to act quickly within a 48-hour window to either call him up, trade him, or let him become a free agent. A seasoned MLB veteran, Kahnle previously played for the Detroit Tigers in 2025 and has two prior tenures with the Yankees.

Expressing his anticipation for the call-up, Kahnle stated, “I had a feeling. I looked at the schedule and I went, ‘of course.’ But, it's going to be the same thing. This time I'll be on the opposite side of this rivalry. So I'm pretty excited to see that.”

Immediately making an impact, Kahnle took the mound against the Orioles on Thursday, delivering two scoreless innings despite the team's early struggles. Reflecting on his return to the major leagues after his time in the minors, he remarked, “Exhausting. It’s hot out. I knew that I had to kind of eat some innings, especially to help the bullpen out. It was fun to get it back out there.”

With Kahnle's addition, the Red Sox aim to strengthen their bullpen as they prepare for a critical matchup against their arch-rivals. This move underscores the team's commitment to enhancing their performance as the season progresses.
