Torres and Chavez Triumph in Albuquerque Boxing Event
While Holly Holm faced a contentious defeat to Stephania Han in El Paso, Teresa Tapia successfully promoted a boxing event at Leo's bar in northwest Albuquerque. The evening showcased several fighters, with notable performances from local talents.
In the headline match, Albuquerque's Josh Torres celebrated a significant achievement by scoring a first-round knockout against Argentina's Diego Gonzales Luque. This victory marked Torres' 30th professional win, bringing his record to 30 victories, 17 by knockout, against seven losses and two draws. The outcome was expected, as Gonzales Luque has struggled recently, suffering 14 losses in his last 15 fights, with only a single draw to show for his efforts.
Looking ahead, Torres is set to face a tougher opponent, Mexico's Alejandro Frias, on a Legacy Promotions card scheduled for July 31. Frias, who boasts a record of 21 wins, 13 losses, and two draws, has secured victories in seven of his last ten bouts.
In the co-main event, Clinton Chavez from San Felipe Pueblo achieved victory over El Paso's Eduardo Monrreal through a sixth-round TKO, having maintained a commanding lead on points leading up to the stoppage. Meanwhile, the sons of the late boxing champion Johnny Tapia, Johnny Tapia Jr. and Johnathan Tapia, faced defeats. Tapia Jr. was knocked down nine times in his bout against Andrew Flamm, resulting in a unanimous decision loss, while Johnathan Tapia lost by unanimous decision to Derek Perez in his first fight since 2010.
Additionally, in a match featuring non-New Mexico fighters, Waco, Texas light heavyweight Sean Hamilton won by first-round stoppage against North Carolina's Daquanti Johnson.
