UConn Welcomes 7-Foot Center Elmir Dzafic from Arkansas to Strengthen Roster
Dan Hurley and the UConn coaching team are actively enhancing their lineup as they prepare for another shot at the NCAA Tournament next season, utilizing the transfer portal to fill key positions. Following a strong journey to the championship game, the Huskies faced significant departures, including Alex Karaban and Tarris Reed Jr., both of whom are heading to the NBA Draft due to ineligibility. Additionally, Malachi Smith will not return, and Jaylin Stewart and Eric Reibe have entered the transfer portal. Starting guard Solo Ball will also miss the upcoming season after undergoing surgery for a persistent wrist issue.
In a significant move, UConn has signed Elmir Dzafic, a 7-foot, 285-pound center from Arkansas, who officially joined the team on Monday. Dzafic, who played limited minutes during his freshman year, averaged 0.4 points and 0.1 rebounds over seven games. While he may not be a standout performer, his addition fills a crucial gap in the roster as Hurley prepares for the next season.
One of the challenges UConn faced in their championship game loss to Michigan was a lack of size, which hindered their performance against the Wolverines. The absence of Reed and Reibe due to foul troubles at critical moments further underscored the need for depth in the frontcourt. Dzafic's signing will provide Hurley with more options when managing player fouls and matching up against larger opponents.
Along with Dzafic, the Huskies have also acquired Isaiah Shaw from Northern Arizona and Jaye Nash from Jacksonville State, both of whom are expected to have limited roles. However, Coach Hurley has a knack for developing players, and their contributions could be pivotal as the season unfolds.
The anticipated starting lineup for UConn includes returning players Silas Demary Jr., Jayden Ross, and Braylon Mullins, who opted to stay in college rather than enter the NBA Draft. The team has also secured Seton Hall's Najai Hines and Duke's Nik Khamenia to bolster their frontcourt. UConn is still on the lookout for a power forward to back up Khamenia, as they aim to solidify their position among the top contenders for the 2027 NCAA Tournament.
