Uruguay's Valverde and Team Settle for Draw Against Saudi Arabia in Group H Clash
In a crucial Group H match on Monday night in Miami, Uruguay faced off against Saudi Arabia with both teams eager to seize the opportunity to take the lead in the standings. The stakes were raised earlier in the day when Spain unexpectedly drew with Cabo Verde, leaving the group wide open for any team to capitalize.
During the first half, Saudi Arabia posed a greater threat, primarily from set pieces. The breakthrough came in the 41st minute when Uruguayan goalkeeper Fernando Muslera, at 40 years old, failed to secure a header from Mohamed Kanno after a corner kick, allowing Abdullah Al-Khaibari to slot the ball into the net.
Uruguay came out stronger in the second half, with Fernando Viñas making two close-range attempts with headers in the opening five minutes. The South American side maintained their momentum, and in the 60th minute, Manchester United’s Manuel Ugarte came agonizingly close to scoring with a powerful shot from 20 meters that struck the post.
In the 80th minute, Uruguay finally found the equalizer with a goal reminiscent of Saudi Arabia's opener. Viñas, attempting a third header, created a rebound that was capitalized on by Maxi Araújo, who pushed the ball into the back of the net. Although Fede Valverde was relatively quiet in the first half, he emerged as a key player after the break, contributing significantly to Uruguay's offensive efforts and testing Saudi goalkeeper Mohammed Al-Owais multiple times.
After this draw, Saudi Arabia will prepare to take on Spain in Atlanta on Sunday, while Uruguay remains in Miami to face Cabo Verde on the same day.
