SEATTLE - As the U.S. Men’s National Team prepares for its second match of the FIFA World Cup on Friday, they find themselves in a remarkable situation. A victory would not only mark just the second time in the tournament's 96-year history that the U.S. secures two wins in the group stage, but it could also pave the way for a place in the knockout phase, contingent on other match outcomes.

The team has garnered significant attention and support following their impressive 4-1 triumph over Paraguay in their opening game. The upcoming clash against Australia at Lumen Field, scheduled for 3 p.m. ET and broadcast on FOX and Telemundo, presents a crucial opportunity for the players to build on this momentum.

Midfielder Cristian Roldan, who also plays for the Seattle Sounders, expressed excitement about the growing national interest, stating, “We’re all aware of it... But what excites me is that the entire world, the entire nation, is behind us. I think that they enjoyed watching us play.” This World Cup offers a chance for the team to inspire future generations, similar to the impact of their success in the 1994 tournament, which was pivotal in launching Major League Soccer.

Viewership numbers from the opening match were impressive, with FOX Sports and Telemundo drawing a combined audience of 24,886,000, significantly surpassing the 2022 opener against Wales. Roldan emphasized the importance of their performance, saying, “At the end of the day, what we want to do is inspire and motivate the next generation.”

Historically, the U.S. has only managed to win twice in the opening round during the inaugural World Cup in 1930, making this upcoming match even more significant. The USMNT currently stands with 1 win and 3 points, and a victory against Australia could see them finish atop Group D, setting up a favorable matchup in the knockout stage.

Another key storyline ahead of the match is the potential participation of star forward Christian Pulisic, who is recovering from a calf injury sustained against Paraguay. U.S. head coach Mauricio Pochettino indicated that a final decision on Pulisic’s status would be made shortly before the game. His teammates remain optimistic about his availability, with midfielder Weston McKennie stating, “Hopefully, he can be there tomorrow.”
