USMNT Players Embrace Home Advantage as World Cup Continues
IRVINE, Calif. – The ongoing FIFA World Cup marks a significant moment in history, being only the second time the tournament is held in the United States. This year’s event is unprecedented, featuring 48 teams—an increase from 24 during the last U.S.-hosted World Cup in 1994—and includes three host nations: the U.S., Canada, and Mexico.
With the tournament's expanded format comes a variety of benefits for the U.S. Men's National Team (USMNT). Forward Brenden Aaronson shared his excitement about the team's camaraderie, saying, "It's an amazing feeling. It's a great group of guys. The togetherness is really close." He noted that while they enjoy each other's company, they can switch to a serious mindset when necessary, as demonstrated in their recent match against Paraguay.
Following their triumphant 4-1 win over Paraguay, the USMNT is taking full advantage of their home-ground benefits. The players have enjoyed a week of training and recovery, including a special day for friends and family, along with opportunities to watch other World Cup matches. Aaronson remarked, "Spending this time with these guys is amazing," as he highlighted the fun they have during downtime, including gaming sessions together.
Defender Antonee Robinson, who has played every minute of the last five World Cup matches, noted a shift in the tournament's scheduling. He explained, "Last time it was pretty much play, recover, play. This time we obviously have a long time to recover and work on things for the opposition." Robinson appreciates the extra time for recovery and preparation, which he believes is beneficial for the team.
As the USMNT prepares for their upcoming match against Australia at Seattle Stadium, the players are eager to build on their recent success. "It was probably my favorite game to be a part of," Robinson said of their match against Paraguay, emphasizing the electric atmosphere. Aaronson echoed these sentiments, describing the crowd in Los Angeles as one of the best he’s experienced. With their sights set on maintaining their lead in Group D, the team looks forward to the support they expect to receive in Seattle.
