Yankees Look to Continue Winning Streak Against A’s with Weathers on the Mound

The unpredictable nature of a lengthy baseball season can shift emotions dramatically in just a few days. Only a week ago, the Yankees faced a tough stretch, losing three straight games to division rivals and trailing the Rays by 5.5 games. Fast forward to today, and the Yankees have a chance to narrow that gap to half a game after winning five consecutive matches while the Rays stumbled against the Angels, losing five of their last six.

On the mound for New York will be Ryan Weathers, who is set to make his 11th start of the season. The former Marlin has enjoyed a strong start with a 3.14 ERA (131 ERA+) and a 3.45 FIP over 57.1 innings, including 65 strikeouts. After a solid seven-inning outing against the Rays at Yankee Stadium, he hopes to replicate his impressive performance from early April, where he allowed just one run in eight innings against the same hitters.

Facing off against Weathers is J.T. Ginn of the Sacramento A’s, a former Mets prospect who recently came close to a no-hitter against the Angels, only to suffer a heartbreaking walk-off defeat. Despite a rough outing in his last game, Ginn maintains a solid 3.19 ERA (141 ERA+) and a 4.18 FIP in 12 appearances, including nine starts. He previously faced the Yankees in 2024, allowing only one run over five innings.

Ginn's pitching style features a five-pitch repertoire, with his sinker being the most frequently used pitch at 54 percent against right-handed batters. He has been effective at limiting hard contact and keeping the ball on the ground, although he has struggled more against left-handed hitters.

For the Yankees, Trent Grisham will lead off, followed by Ben Rice, Aaron Judge, Cody Bellinger, and Jazz Chisholm Jr. Paul Goldschmidt will start at first base, batting sixth, while Ryan McMahon, Austin Wells, and Anthony Volpe fill out the rest of the lineup. Notably, Amed Rosario is on paternity leave and will not be available for this game.

Meanwhile, the A’s will have Colby Thomas leading off, with Nick Kurtz, Shea Langeliers, Brent Rooker, and Tyler Soderstrom following. The middle infield features Henry Bolte and Zack Gelof, with Darell Hernaiz and Alika Williams rounding out their batting order.

Catch the action live from Sutter Health Park in West Sacramento, CA, with first pitch scheduled for 10:05 PM ET. The game will be broadcast on YES and NBCSCA, with radio coverage available on WFAN 660/101.9 FM and A’s Cast.
