Zionsville Overcomes Early Struggles to Capture Sectional Title

NOBLESVILLE --- The Class 4A Sectional 8 championship unfolded with a rocky beginning for Zionsville pitcher Davis Moore, who faced immediate challenges in Monday's match against Fishers. Following a quick first inning, Moore lost his precision, allowing a leadoff single to David Pina, followed by a walk and two hit batters, resulting in an early run for the Tigers.

In an effort to regain his composure, Zionsville coach Jered Moore approached the mound for a chat with his son. However, the discussion proved ineffective as Henry Cherry capitalized on Moore’s first-pitch fastball, sending it crashing into the left field fence for a two-run single that leveled the score at 3-3. Despite the shaky inning, Moore rebounded, allowing just two batters to reach base for the remainder of his outing, paving the way for teammate Ayden Keith to secure the final four outs and clinch a 4-3 victory for Zionsville.

With this win, Zionsville (16-14) is set to take on Harrison (19-10) in the upcoming Class 4A regional championship on Saturday. Moore reflected on his second inning struggles, stating, “I couldn't just throw a strike and let them hit it. I'm just glad I have that defense behind me, so when I do throw a strike, I know they're going to make a play.” He finished the game with three runs allowed on two hits and two walks, striking out four across 5⅔ innings. Keith recorded a save, striking out two while throwing 1⅓ hitless innings.

The first inning saw Fishers (16-14) hindered by errors, including a slip by pitcher Owen Lukac while fielding a bunt from Tyler Hughes, which allowed Hughes to reach base. Following an RBI single from Reid Zittel, a pick-off attempt by Lukac went awry, allowing both Hughes and Zittel to cross home plate.

Fishers' reliever Austin Conley entered the game in the second inning, effectively neutralizing the Eagles’ offense with seven strikeouts over five scoreless innings. In the seventh inning, with two outs, Carter Strole walked, and Pina was hit by a pitch, but Keith struck out Isaac Fernandez to seal the game. Fishers coach Matthew Cherry commended his team’s resilience, noting, “They didn’t quit... We made some adjustments midseason and they really bought into it.”

The sectional championship marks a significant achievement for Zionsville, which has had a tumultuous season. After starting strong with a 7-1 record, the Eagles struggled, losing six out of seven games. They have proven their clutch ability by winning their sectional matches by narrow margins. “This team is the best team I’ve ever played with,” Davis Moore expressed. “We didn’t have the best start to the season, but it only matters when you get hot, and we’re hot right now. We’re playing our hearts out and that’s what matters.”
