Anders Guides Abington Heights Lacrosse into PIAA Quarterfinals
Gavin Anders, who began his lacrosse journey in fifth grade, has played a crucial role in the evolution of Abington Heights' varsity lacrosse program. His contributions have transformed the team into a formidable contender, and as he enters his final season, he is determined to lead the Comets into a pivotal PIAA Class 2A quarterfinal match against District 1 powerhouse Penncrest this Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Emmaus High School Football Stadium.
Reflecting on the season, Anders expressed his pride, stating, “It’s so amazing. I always pictured us having a great year when we were seniors. We came up short in some of our tough games, but we always fight. This team’s heart is in the game and has been all season.” After starting with the Lakeland Tribe Youth program, Anders quickly became a dedicated player, making a significant impact in his freshman year with 36 goals and earning recognition on the Wyoming Valley Conference Coaches’ all-star second team and The Times-Tribune All-Region team.
As a sophomore, he continued to elevate the program, leading the Comets to consecutive District 2 Class 2A playoff appearances. That season, he was again named a WVC second-team all-star, scoring 69 goals, including his 100th career goal. In his junior year, he achieved a team-high 53 goals and received All-Region honors for the third consecutive time, subsequently committing to play NCAA Division I lacrosse at McDaniel College.
However, after a standout football season where he set records as a wide receiver and defensive back, Anders opted to shift his collegiate focus to football, de-committing from McDaniel and choosing to join Lackawanna College's football team. Despite this change, he has maintained his excellence in lacrosse, tallying 45 goals and 25 assists this season, bringing his career total to 203 goals.
