Bellingham Embraces Pressure as England Triumphs Over Croatia
Jude Bellingham has expressed that the surrounding "noise" regarding his position in the England squad may actually motivate him to reach peak performance during the World Cup. Leading up to England's opening group match against Croatia, discussions centered on whether manager Thomas Tuchel would opt for Bellingham from Real Madrid or Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa in the pivotal number 10 role behind captain Harry Kane.
Ultimately, Bellingham was selected to start in Dallas, where he played a vital role by scoring England's third goal shortly after the half-time break. Marcus Rashford later added a fourth goal, securing a 4-2 victory for England.
Reflecting on the match, the 22-year-old, who is competing in his fourth major tournament with England, stated to BBC Sport, "For me personally, it was nice to put some of the noise aside and just show my country and my team-mates how committed I am to help us try to win football matches." He underscored that contributing to his team and nation remains one of his greatest honors, regardless of external opinions.
Bellingham acknowledged that this season has presented challenges, particularly due to injuries and his club's performance, which saw them finish eight points behind champions Barcelona. However, he asserted that he feels "fresh and sharp" as the tournament begins, appreciating the supportive comments from teammates like Jordan Henderson, who described Bellingham as providing an "X-factor" for the team.
When asked if he approached the World Cup with an extra drive, Bellingham responded, "A little bit - I think I've got a little bit of a chip on my shoulder, haven't I?" He noted that this mentality helps him focus and intensify his game. "I know that it's part of being a footballer and I don't hold a grudge against anyone who says bad things about me because sometimes I do deserve it," he added.
Bellingham, who scored in England's World Cup opener against Iran in 2022, demonstrated his knack for crucial goals again by capitalizing on a pass from Elliot Anderson to net a low shot past the Croatian goalkeeper, restoring England’s lead for the third time in the match. Former England defender Micah Richards, now a pundit for BBC Sport, remarked, "Bellingham is a big-game player," emphasizing his ability to deliver when it matters most.
