Bengals Eye Myles Murphy Extension Following Seahawks' Contract Model
The Cincinnati Bengals are focused on securing defensive end Myles Murphy for the long haul, aiming to extend his contract beyond the 2026 season. However, the team recently opted not to exercise Murphy's fifth-year option, which means his rookie deal will conclude at the end of the 2026 league year. This decision has accelerated the urgency for the Bengals to negotiate an extension sooner rather than later.
Fortunately, the Bengals may find a useful reference in the recent contract extension of Derick Hall, a defensive end with the Seattle Seahawks. Hall signed a three-year deal worth $42 million, which could rise to $46.5 million with incentives. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, $21 million of that total is guaranteed. The average annual value (AAV) of Hall's contract, approximately $14 million, is closely aligned with what Murphy's fifth-year option would have been—$14.475 million.
Murphy, a first-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, and Hall, selected shortly after him, share several similarities. While Hall has outperformed Murphy in key statistical categories, such as games played and sacks, both players have shown potential as significant contributors to their teams. Hall has appeared in 48 games, starting 17, while Murphy has played in 47 games with 10 starts.
In contract negotiations, it’s often beneficial for teams to reference comparable contracts in the league. Despite Hall's stronger track record, the market dynamics suggest that earlier deals for promising players tend to be less costly in the long run. Murphy’s representatives will likely highlight his youth and potential for growth during negotiations, especially considering his breakout season as a first-time starter in 2025.
As the Bengals navigate these negotiations, they face the challenge of securing Murphy at a favorable rate. While it would be a savvy move to offer him a deal under Hall's, the reality is that Murphy's extension may end up being slightly pricier. How Cincinnati proceeds will be pivotal in their efforts to keep this promising young talent.
