Braden Mann Shines as Cathedral Claims Regional Championship Against Shelbyville
GREENWOOD --- The Class 3A regional championship game took a sudden turn for Cathedral when senior second baseman Tyler Carlos injured his knee just moments into the match. After colliding with the turf while fielding a ground ball, Carlos exited the game, leaving the Fighting Irish to rally without their second-best hitter. However, senior Braden Mann was primed to seize the moment.
In the fifth inning, with runners on first and second, Mann hit a grounder back to Shelbyville pitcher Reece Prickett. Prickett attempted to throw out the lead runner at third but misfired, allowing both the tying and go-ahead runs to score. Cathedral then secured the victory with three additional runs in the seventh, finishing the game with a 6-1 triumph over the Golden Bears. With this win, Cathedral (21-9-1) clinched its tenth regional title in program history and is set to face Gibson Southern in the semistate semifinals.
Coach Ed Freije praised Mann's readiness and dedication, stating, "His preparation is unmatched. He's about as dialed in a player and a kid that there is. He competes really hard. He practices really hard. He's a student of the game and a phenomenal teammate." Mann, who had only participated in 12 games and made eight plate appearances prior to Saturday, managed to reach base twice and scored two runs during the match. His defensive skills were also on display when he made a sliding stop at second base, preventing a runner from scoring and maintaining a 3-1 lead.
"I was going to continue to trust in this team," Mann remarked. "I didn't know if it was going to be me. I didn't know if it was going to be the person on my left or right, I was just ready to make a play and help my team win."
On the mound, pitcher Henry Haley delivered a solid performance, striking out seven batters while allowing four hits and two walks. He credited his success to trusting his defense, saying, "They told me I could trust them at the beginning of the game, so pitching to contact and trusting my infield to get the balls in play and get outs." Meanwhile, Shelbyville faced their own challenges, missing star player Aiden Smith, a Kentucky commit, who is sidelined with a knee injury that requires surgery. Despite the setback, coach Jacon Shively reflected positively on his team's season, noting, "We're proud of what they accomplished. We expected to win every game... those are the things after all this is done that they'll carry with them."
