Burrell Post 868 Looks to Build on Last Season’s Success in District 31
As the District 31 league season kicks off, Burrell Post 868 faced Mt. Pleasant and initially found themselves trailing by three runs after the second inning. However, the Bulldogs quickly regained their momentum on their home turf, scoring four runs in the fourth inning to take the lead. They went on to secure a 12-4 victory with additional runs in the fifth and sixth innings.
"It was a really nice game to get everyone some action," remarked Burrell coach Steve Scheftic, who is entering his third season at the Senior Legion level after a lengthy hiatus of nearly two decades. He noted the team’s ability to come together, highlighting that three different pitchers were utilized during the game. "We can already sense the group is focused from the success they had last year, and the new players are excited to prove themselves," Scheftic added. He believes this energetic team has the potential for a successful season ahead.
Last year, Burrell ended with a record of 14-12-1, falling to Bushy Run in the District 31 finals but still earning a spot in the Region 7 tournament. Although they lost four key starters due to age restrictions, nine returning players are joined by nine newcomers eager to make their impact. The team consists of players from New Kensington, Arnold, Lower Burrell, and the Westmoreland County section of the Kiski Area School District.
Notably, nine players hail from the Burrell High School team that finished 7-5 in Section 3-3A, reaching the WPIAL quarterfinals. The transition to the American Legion season has been seamless for these athletes, including standout talents like Brady and Noah Dzanaj from Valley, and Dominick and Rocco Fabrizi from Kiski Area. Coach Scheftic emphasized Rocco Fabrizi's potential, saying, "For a kid going into ninth grade, he is big and should be able to give us some good innings."
As Burrell prepares for a busy schedule, with upcoming games against formidable opponents, Scheftic expressed confidence in his pitching staff's depth, which will be crucial given the compact season. The excitement surrounding Legion baseball is palpable, particularly among younger players who are eager to compete. "The atmosphere is pretty fun for the players," he concluded, highlighting the league’s enduring reputation for strong competition.
