CAS Upholds FIFA Fines on Mexico for Fan Homophobia Ahead of World Cup

The Mexican Football Federation (FMF) faced a significant legal blow just ahead of the 2026 World Cup when the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) upheld FIFA's financial penalties related to ongoing homophobic chants by fans. The decision comes as the federation appealed to reduce the fines imposed for this conduct.

Based in Lausanne, Switzerland, CAS confirmed that the total penalties amount to 140,000 Swiss francs, roughly equivalent to $178,000. The FMF argued it has taken substantial steps to eliminate the offensive chants that are frequently heard during opponents’ goal kicks. However, the court found that such behavior persists widely in stadiums.

While CAS did remove the sanction that would have required partial stadium closures during the tournament, FIFA will still enforce strict monitoring. The organization announced it will deploy specialized discrimination monitors throughout the 104 matches set to occur in Mexico, the United States, and Canada, with particular attention given to Mexico's opening match at the iconic Azteca Stadium.

This situation highlights the ongoing challenges sports organizations face in addressing discrimination in fan behavior, especially as the international spotlight intensifies during major tournaments.
