Clear Fork's Taylor Bly Shines at Regional Track Championships
PIQUA — During the Division III regional championship track and field event held at Piqua High School on Saturday, May 30, Clear Fork junior Taylor Bly entered the stadium with two ambitious goals in mind. She aimed to achieve a time under 55 seconds in the 400-meter dash while also competing against the pressure of being a top contender in her race.
Bly came remarkably close to her personal target, clinching the regional championship in the 400-meter dash with a swift time of 55.03 seconds. She finished ahead of her nearest competitor by a comfortable margin of 0.91 seconds. “I was so close,” Bly expressed, beaming with excitement. “I actually had goosebumps before this race. I was so nervous because I knew there was a target on my back and I was going in trying to do something crazy like go for 54 seconds. It is right there and I am so close.”
This marks Bly's second consecutive year qualifying for the Division III state track and field championships at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium, located on the Ohio State University campus. Previously, she had to rely on an at-large bid to qualify, finishing eighth at the state level. This year, however, she was determined not to leave her fate to chance. “My push was how much I hated going to state last year out of luck,” Bly stated. “This year, it was not happening. It was in my head that I am leaving nothing to chance and I was going to make sure I was going to state on my own accord.”
In addition to her individual success, Bly was also an integral part of the Clear Fork team, which won the Division III regional championship in the 4x400-meter relay. Alongside teammates Katie Beck, Quinn Stover, and Asia Bechtel, they secured the title with a time of 3:53.45. Bly made a strategic choice to forgo the 100 and 200-meter dashes to ensure her legs were fresh for the 400 and relays, a decision echoed by Stover, who opted out of the 800-meter event for the same reason. “Dropping the 800 was the best decision I could have made because we needed a good split for the 4x400,” Stover reflected.
Each member of the relay team contributed their strengths, with Beck setting an impressive pace during the first leg. “I always feel like first leg is so important because you need the rest of your teammates to be in a good spot for the rest of the race,” Beck said. Bechtel held her ground in the third leg, ensuring Bly was in a competitive position for the final push. “All I wanted to do was put my anchor in a good spot,” Bechtel explained.
Ultimately, Bly secured the relay victory, but she emphasized the importance of teamwork. “All these girls put me in an amazing spot and put me exactly where I needed to be,” Bly remarked, crediting her teammates for their contributions. In addition to the 4x400-meter relay, Beck, Bechtel, Taylor Richmond, and Bly are also set to compete in the 4x200-meter relay after finishing third with a time of 1:42.35. Bechtel also qualified in the high jump with a clearance of 5-02, while distance runner Katrina Neal will represent Clear Fork in both the 1,600 and 3,200-meter events at the state championships.
