Colts Defense Poised for Change with Potential New Starters in 2026
The Indianapolis Colts have focused on retaining key players like Daniel Jones and Alec Pierce during the offseason, but the team has seen significant changes, particularly on the defensive front. As a result, five of the eleven defensive starters could be different by 2026, with many of these potential newcomers lacking extensive NFL experience.
On the defensive line, with Kwity Paye now playing for the Las Vegas Raiders, Arden Key and Jaylahn Tuimoloau are vying for a starting position alongside Laiatu Latu. Key has shown consistent performance throughout his career, yet he has not reached the production level that the Colts require. In contrast, Tuimoloau has only logged 215 snaps in his rookie season.
The linebacker corps will also see a shift, with two new starters expected. CJ Allen is likely to step in as the MIKE linebacker, while Akeem Davis-Gaither, Jaylon Carlies, and Bryce Boettcher have all taken snaps with the first team during minicamp.
Replacing Kenny Moore at nickel cornerback will be Justin Walley, who, along with Allen and Boettcher, has yet to gain any NFL experience. Carlies has played just over 200 snaps at the professional level. Meanwhile, the safety position opposite Cam Bynum remains uncertain following Nick Cross's departure in free agency. Rookie AJ Haulcy is currently favored to take the spot, but Jonathan Owens, Hunter Wohler, and Juanyeh Thomas are also in contention.
As General Manager Chris Ballard expressed earlier this offseason, the goal has been to infuse youth and speed into the defense. While this strategy may lead to a more dynamic unit, it also introduces a level of uncertainty, particularly for a Colts team eager to secure wins immediately.
