Colts' Minicamp Shows Promise for Backup Running Back Contenders

Jonathan Taylor is set to be the primary running back for the Indianapolis Colts, but the question of who will back him up remains open. Competing for that crucial second spot are DJ Giddens and Seth McGowan, both of whom have minimal experience at the NFL level. Giddens logged only 70 snaps during his rookie season and often found himself inactive due to his struggles on special teams and the need to improve his pass protection skills. In contrast, McGowan enters the league as a rookie and aims to make an immediate impression.

Following minicamp, Jake Arthur of Roundtable Sports highlighted some "encouraging" developments regarding the Colts' backup running back situation. He noted that Giddens appears to have gained confidence and decisiveness in his play, while McGowan is demonstrating a high level of effort. "No one can compare with Taylor, but if either Giddens or McGowan proves capable in pass protection and/or on special teams, the Colts might already have a real backup on the roster," Arthur stated.

As Arthur pointed out, the competition for the RB2 position may hinge less on each player's performance as a rusher and more on their effectiveness in pass protection and special teams roles, which is where they are likely to see most of their playing time. Taylor, who ranked third in the league for rushing attempts last season, is expected to continue being heavily relied upon.

Colts head coach Shane Steichen also commented on Giddens' development from his first year to his second, emphasizing the importance of the ongoing competition for the backup running back spot. This minicamp has certainly generated optimism as the Colts look to solidify their roster ahead of the new season.
