Dalic Criticizes Croatia's Set-Piece Defense Following Loss to England

Zlatko Dalic expressed his disappointment over Croatia's inability to manage England's set-piece threats during their 4-2 loss in the World Cup opener on Wednesday. The match, held in Texas, featured an explosive start as Martin Baturina's impressive equalizer followed Harry Kane's retaken penalty, which was awarded after Luka Modric fouled Noni Madueke during an early set play.

However, Croatia's defensive lapses became evident when Petar Musa also found the net after England's captain was left unmarked to head in a corner taken by Declan Rice. England's Jude Bellingham and Marcus Rashford later added two more goals, propelling them to a solid victory in the second half.

Post-match, Dalic appeared visibly frustrated, particularly with his team's failure to respond to England's set-piece strategy. "Allow me first to congratulate England on the win," he stated. "It was quite a strange game, quite a difficult game, as we expected it to be." He acknowledged that while the team performed well in the first half, they fell short in critical moments, especially regarding set-pieces.

Dalic noted, "We made a lot of mistakes," and emphasized the need for significant improvements ahead of their next match against Panama. "Until now we were quite good in the set-pieces... We knew England’s way of play, we knew that they’re making a block and we failed to do what we practised." He lamented the ease with which they conceded goals from set plays, recognizing England's strength in this area, where nearly 40% of their goals originate.

As they prepare for their upcoming match, Croatia's coach insists that the team must enhance their performance to avoid similar pitfalls in the future.
