Dan Campbell Provides Worrying Update on Kerby Joseph's Injury Status

Detroit Lions supporters eager for clarity regarding Kerby Joseph's injury received a candid yet troubling update from head coach Dan Campbell on Thursday. Following a knee injury that prematurely ended Joseph's 2025 season, the team remains uncertain about how the All-Pro safety's recovery will unfold as they approach the start of training activities.

During a press briefing before OTA practice in Allen Park, Campbell acknowledged the team's current state of ambiguity. Joseph has played a pivotal role in the Lions' defense over recent seasons, making his rehabilitation a significant topic this offseason. Unfortunately, Campbell admitted, "I don’t know. I honestly do not know." He emphasized that both the team and Joseph have put in extensive effort toward the recovery process.

The uncertainty is largely due to Joseph's lack of return to football-specific activities. Although the Lions are monitoring his rehabilitation closely, they will not have a clearer picture until Joseph begins to test his knee on the field. "We are trying to be as smart as we can and not push this until we absolutely have to," Campbell explained, noting that they prefer to focus on treatment and strengthening for now.

In light of Joseph's situation, the Lions have made strategic moves to bolster their safety position, adding players like Christian Izien and Chuck Clark, and re-signing veteran Avonte Maddox. These acquisitions serve as essential support as both Joseph and Brian Branch work through their recoveries. Campbell has expressed particular interest in Izien, highlighting his potential and readiness to contribute to the team.

Despite Joseph's uncertain status, Campbell expressed optimism regarding the overall depth of the safety group. He mentioned several players who will vie for positions when training camp opens, emphasizing the competitive mix of youth and experience within the roster. While the Lions would prefer to have Joseph fully healthy, they continue to approach his rehabilitation diligently, understanding that definitive answers may not surface until training camp.
