Detroit Lions Lead ESPN's Rankings for Potential Turnaround

ESPN has high hopes for the Detroit Lions as they look ahead to the 2026 NFL season. In a recent analysis identifying teams most likely to improve dramatically, the Lions topped the outlet's worst-to-first rankings, based on its Football Power Index (FPI).

Among the eight teams that finished in last place last season, the Lions are considered the frontrunners for a turnaround. Achieving this feat would continue a trend in the NFC North, following the Chicago Bears' impressive rise from a 5-12 record in 2024 to an 11-6 finish and division title last year.

According to ESPN's FPI, the Lions have a 38.2% chance of clinching the NFC North title, which is the highest in their division, and a solid 68.4% probability of making the playoffs—ranking them sixth overall in the NFL. ESPN highlighted three key factors that give Detroit the edge: their schedule, injury history, and their performance last season.

The Lions ended the previous season ranked third in both FPI and DVOA (defense-adjusted value over average). Despite concerns about their offensive line, the team has consistently ranked among the top eight offenses for the past four seasons. Additionally, their defense has shown significant talent, placing them in the top 10 for all three phases of the game in both 2024 and 2025.

Detroit notably had a winning record last season and was just one victory shy of finishing second in the NFC North. The team’s unfortunate history of injuries, particularly on defense, could also change; last year, they recorded the highest number of defensive injuries in the league. This season, they face a relatively favorable schedule, ranked 27th in difficulty, with easier matchups against teams like the Giants and Titans, rather than tougher opponents.

While the future is uncertain, ESPN's analysis paints a promising picture for the Lions as they gear up for the upcoming season. Following closely behind Detroit in the rankings are the New Orleans Saints, New York Giants, and Tennessee Titans.
