Devin Vassell Reflects on Lou Williams’ Influence as Spurs Compete in NBA Finals
As the San Antonio Spurs face off against the New York Knicks in the NBA finals, star player Devin Vassell has shared insights about his upbringing in Gwinnett County, Georgia, and the significant impact of local basketball legend Lou Williams in an interview with the Players’ Tribune. Vassell, who attended Peachtree Ridge High School in Suwanee, spoke fondly of his inspiration during his formative years.
Vassell highlighted Williams, a celebrated figure who played for South Gwinnett High School and holds the record for the most points scored in Georgia high school basketball history. “Every hooper got that one guy from their hometown that made them fall in love with the game. For me? That was Lou Will,” Vassell expressed, recalling the many stories he heard growing up about the Comets' star.
Williams led the Comets to a state championship title during his junior year and finished his high school career with an impressive total of over 3,390 points. In recognition of his achievements, South Gwinnett honored him by renaming their gym “LouWillVille” in 2020, solidifying his legacy in the community.
Vassell reminisced about the electrifying atmosphere during Williams' games, noting how the crowd would erupt at the start of each match, anticipating Williams' signature lob play. “The crowd would already be standing in the bleachers before the ball dropped through the hoop. I’ll never forget how the gym would go crazy for like the whole game,” he recalled.
While Vassell has yet to experience a championship moment akin to Williams' high school success, he made a name for himself in his senior year, averaging 21.6 points per game and leading his team to the Elite Eight of the GHSA Class AAAAAAA state championship. His journey serves as a beacon of hope for aspiring players, as noted by Peachtree Ridge head coach Jordan Griffin, who stated that Vassell inspires young athletes to believe they can achieve greatness. Currently, with the Spurs aiming to even the finals, Vassell has contributed 12 points in the ongoing game.
