Dodgers Place Blake Snell on 60-Day Injured List, Extending Recovery Timeline
The Los Angeles Dodgers have officially placed left-handed pitcher Blake Snell on the 60-day injured list ahead of their matchup with the Philadelphia Phillies, paving the way for Santiago Espinal's return to the roster. This decision follows Snell's recent "Skubalscope" surgery, a procedure gaining traction for treating loose bodies in the elbow, which he underwent less than two weeks ago.
The innovative surgery utilizes a NanoNeedle Scope, allowing for a less invasive approach that may expedite recovery. Notably, Detroit Tigers pitcher Tarik Skubal, who also had this procedure, has already resumed throwing, showcasing a significantly shortened recovery period.
Snell, who has made just one start this season, was initially hopeful for a quicker return than the typical three-month recovery time often associated with such injuries—similar to that of Edwin Diaz. However, with the latest developments, Snell will not be eligible to return until at least July 10, just ahead of the All-Star break.
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts expressed optimism regarding Snell's surgery, stating, “It went well. As well as to be expected. I guess the nano thing was a good thing, obviously. So the recovery is cut much shorter. I don’t have a timeline. I just know that it’s shorter than what we initially anticipated.”
Looking ahead, Snell's return is likely to be pushed back to late July or early August. The Dodgers have sufficient pitching depth, allowing Snell to take his time in the minors for rehabilitation. This approach will enable him to regain his form and prepare adequately for a potential postseason run.
