USC Baseball Set for First Super Regional in Over Two Decades

The USC baseball team is gearing up to face off against the UNC Tar Heels this weekend, marking the Trojans' first appearance in a Super Regional in 21 years. With a season record of 47-16, USC will compete against UNC, which boasts a record of 43-11-1, in a crucial best-of-three series that could lead them to the College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska.

It's been a long journey for the Trojans, who have not reached the eight-team tournament since 1998. This long-awaited opportunity has been on the minds of both players and coaching staff, as noted by Haley Sawyer from the Orange County Register. Sophomore catcher Augie Lopez expressed his pride, stating, “It’s been an honor to wear the Trojan brand on the front of my chest. Honestly, just knowing that this team is the team to bring USC back to a super regional is incredible.”

Head coach Andy Stankiewicz also shared his pride in the team's accomplishments, saying, “Man, I can’t tell you how proud I am of everybody on our team. They just kept working, kept getting after it and believing in each other.”

The Trojans secured their place in the Super Regionals after overcoming an initial loss to Texas State during the regional round held at Texas A&M. They rebounded impressively by defeating the top-seeded team in two games, outscoring them 21-4 in the process. This achievement allows USC, the most successful program in college baseball history with 12 championships, to vie for another title after a long drought.

The first game of the series kicks off at noon PT on Friday at Boshamer Stadium in Chapel Hill and will be aired on ESPN2. The second game is scheduled for Saturday at 11 a.m. PT on ESPN, while details for a possible third game on Sunday are still pending. The winner of this series will advance to face the victor of the Ole Miss versus Auburn matchup.
