ESPN on ABC Clarifies Texas Tech-Tennessee Postgame Controversy with Footage
During the Women’s College World Series game between Texas and Nebraska on Sunday, ESPN on ABC took the opportunity to address a viral incident from the previous day’s matchup between Tennessee and Texas Tech. The controversy arose during the postgame handshake, prompting questions about what was said between players.
After Saturday’s game, media representatives sought clarification from Texas Tech’s Taylor Pannell regarding her interaction with Tennessee’s head coach, Karen Weekly. Pannell, who previously played for Tennessee and earned All-SEC honors twice, transferred to Texas Tech in the off-season. She recounted her experience, stating, “We were walking through the line just saying ‘good game,’ and she said that I made a mistake instead of saying ‘good game,’ which is kind of crazy.” Pannell added, “I just think it’s funny she’s still thinking about it. But it’s old news. Whatever.”
In response, Weekly maintained that her message was simply “good game,” a standard sentiment she shares with all players. To provide context, ESPN on ABC aired footage of the handshake, accompanied by commentary from play-by-play announcer Beth Mowins, who analyzed the interaction.
Mowins explained, “Our postgame cameras; we spot-shadow Weekly on the left; No. 6 in red is Pannell. Walking down the handshake line, there doesn’t seem to be a reaction there.” She continued, “We do not see Weekly say anything different. There is no reaction from Pannell there.” Mowins noted that after the handshake, Pannell appeared to react to something happening on the field, which led Texas Tech head coach Gerry Glasco to inquire about the situation.
Ultimately, the footage did not confirm any specific comment from Weekly that might have upset Pannell, leaving the incident somewhat ambiguous. Nonetheless, the detailed breakdown by ESPN on ABC provided clarity on the exchange, which Weekly likely appreciated amid the ongoing discussion.
