Fleetwood Joins Four-Way Tie for Lead at Memorial as Scheffler Struggles in Opening Round

DUBLIN, Ohio — Scottie Scheffler, aiming for an unprecedented third consecutive Memorial title, faced a frustrating challenge in his first round on Thursday. The world's top golfer found himself six strokes behind the leaders, grappling with gusty winds and an uncooperative game at Muirfield Village.

Four players — Wyndham Clark, J.J. Spaun, Tommy Fleetwood, and Ryan Gerard — each recorded impressive scores of 5-under 67, marking them as the early front-runners. Notably, this was Fleetwood's best round at the Memorial in five appearances, despite only hitting seven greens throughout the day.

Scheffler had his share of difficulties, including a double bogey on the 16th hole after his approach shot found the water. He expressed his frustration to caddie Ted Scott, saying, “I don’t think you understand how frustrating that is.” With a final score of 73, he reflected on his round, noting the unpredictability of the game: “I striped one on the hole before that and I end up in the water.”

Gerard's round was particularly eventful, featuring a par on a par 5 followed by a double bogey on a par 3. He managed five birdies on the back nine, showcasing resilience and skill, while Fleetwood acknowledged benefiting from some lucky breaks during his round. Others like Nick Taylor and Rory McIlroy also navigated the challenging course, with McIlroy finishing at 71 after recovering from an early setback.

As the tournament progresses, the focus will shift to the second round, with all eyes on the leaders as well as Scheffler, who remains determined to improve his performance and make a comeback.
