Haiti Changes Kit Design Ahead of Historic World Cup Match
Haiti's national soccer team has had to revise their kit design just days before their much-anticipated World Cup match against Scotland. This marks Haiti's first appearance in the tournament since 1974, and the original shirt design featured a depiction of the Battle of Vertières, a pivotal event in the country's fight for independence.
The kit design, which prominently included the Haitian flag alongside the historical illustration, was deemed non-compliant with FIFA's regulations. These rules expressly prohibit any "political, religious, or personal messages or slogans" from being displayed on team uniforms.
Colombian manufacturer Saeta, responsible for producing the team's kits, explained that the original design was crafted as a tribute to the resilience of the Haitian people. "It was not intended as a political statement," the company emphasized. Nonetheless, FIFA requested modifications due to concerns that certain visual elements could be misinterpreted in light of their equipment guidelines.
Despite the misunderstanding, Saeta expressed respect for FIFA's decision and complied with the necessary changes to meet the organization’s requirements. Haiti's squad is set to kick off their World Cup journey against Scotland at Boston Stadium, Foxborough, on Saturday evening (02:00 BST Sunday).
Following their match with Scotland, Haiti will also face formidable opponents Brazil and Morocco in Group C. In their only previous World Cup appearance in 1974, Haiti faced a challenging tournament, losing all three matches and conceding a total of 14 goals.
