Harrison High School Captures First Regional Title with Dominant Fifth Inning
DAYTON, Ohio – The Harrison High School baseball team, which has not been part of a league following the dissolution of the Southwest Ohio Conference, faced some of Greater Cincinnati's top teams this season. Despite finishing the regular season with a 10-10 record, the Wildcats have harnessed their experiences to triumph in the postseason, culminating in their first-ever regional championship.
On June 4, Harrison defeated Anderson 6-3 in the Ohio High School Athletic Association Division II, Region 8 championship at Day Air Ballpark. The Wildcats improved their season record to 14-10 and are set to compete in the state semifinals on June 12 in Canton. Meanwhile, Anderson, which last reached the state tournament in 2002, wrapped up its season with a 21-8 record, marking its most victories in over a decade.
Head coach Ben Turner expressed his pride in the team, stating, “It means everything because I feel like I've seen these kids at their lowest point.” He reflected on the challenges the team faced throughout the season, noting, “We've struggled a little bit. Even in workouts. We've struggled, and I've seen them do that, and I've seen them be down.” The Wildcats found their rhythm during the playoffs, winning four consecutive games to secure the title.
The decisive moment of the championship came in the fifth inning, where Harrison exploded for five runs. The Wildcats showcased their offensive prowess with 12 hits, while pitchers Preston Flick and David Baldock effectively held Anderson to just four hits, with Drew Baker earning a save by closing out the game.
Having previously lost to Anderson and Loveland earlier in the season, the Wildcats were determined to perform better in the playoffs. Senior Tucker Ward acknowledged the team's potential, saying, “We knew that we had a good group. We had a lot of talent and even more heart.” With their regional title secured, Harrison looks forward to making history in the upcoming state tournament.
