Historic Moment for New Zealand as Tyler and Jenny Bindon Become First Mother-Son Pair in World Cup History
In a groundbreaking moment for New Zealand, Tyler Bindon made his World Cup debut during the match against Iran, marking a significant achievement alongside his mother, Jenny Bindon. The duo is celebrated as the first mother and son to participate in a World Cup event.
Jenny Bindon, who served as a goalkeeper for New Zealand from 2004 to 2014, has previously showcased her talent in the Women’s World Cup during the years 2007 and 2011, as well as at the Olympic Games in 2008 and 2012. Tyler, at just 21 years old, plays as a center back in the Premier League for Nottingham Forest and came off the bench in the game that ended in a 2-2 draw with Iran. His parents, including his father Grant, a former captain of New Zealand's volleyball team, cheered him on from the stands in Inglewood, California.
When Tyler was 12, the family relocated to California, where Jenny took on the role of assistant coach for UCLA's women's soccer team. Tyler honed his skills at the Los Angeles FC academy. Reflecting on her experience as a spectator, Jenny shared on social media, “I find watching him play even more challenging than playing myself. I get more nervous, but he is an absolute joy — an amazing human being.”
The All Whites are set to face Egypt next on Sunday in Vancouver, British Columbia, following Egypt's 1-1 draw with Belgium in their opening match. While Tyler and Jenny Bindon have made history, numerous other father-son combinations have also graced the World Cup, including Claudio Reyna and his son Gio, who scored for the United States in their recent victory over Paraguay.
