Hopedale Softball Advances to State Final for First Time in Over Three Decades

LOWELL - In the world of Division 5 softball, Emily Atwood has emerged as a standout player, showcasing her skills on the mound and at the plate. On Wednesday night, she struck out 11 batters and played a pivotal role in igniting a crucial rally for her team. It all started in the fifth inning when Atwood was hit by a pitch while her team trailed by two runs, setting the stage for a comeback.

After taking a hit to her elbow, Atwood slammed her bat down in frustration but quickly turned her focus to motivating her teammates. After she was substituted for a pinch runner, the Hopedale Blue Raiders went on to score six consecutive runs, ultimately clinching a 9-6 victory over Georgetown. This win marks a significant milestone for Hopedale, as it propels them to their first state championship game since 1990.

Hopedale is set to face Maynard in the title match on Saturday at noon, hosted at Worcester State. “It was more hype mad than (being) really mad,” Atwood remarked after inspecting her elbow for potential bruising at River View Field at UMass-Lowell. “Just trying to get my team hyped up and usually when that stuff happens, we start rallies and we start scoring runs.”

The Blue Raiders' journey to the finals is a testament to their resilience and team spirit, igniting excitement among their supporters as they aim for the championship title.
