In the Room: Nelson, Necas Address Poor Offensive Production in WCF
We’re three games into the Western Conference Final, and many of the Avalanche’s top guys haven’t given them all that much to celebrate. Nathan MacKinnon has just two assists, Cale Makar was held without a point in his return, and Artturi Lehkonen, albeit likely playing hurt, has yet to find the scoresheet.
Then there’s Martin Necas and Brock Nelson. They are often linked together, because the salary cap the Avs made up by trading Mikko Rantanen for Martin Necas, was used to also add Brock Nelson as the second-line center.
Against the Vegas Golden Knights, the two of them have one assist, combined. And it was the helper from Necas on the Nazem Kadri goal in Game 3.
Nelson has zero points and a -6 rating in three games. He has just one shot on goal since Game 1.
Neither of them is playing hurt, at least not that we know of. When the Avalanche have needed them most, the offense has run dry.
Both Nelson and Necas were made available to the media on Monday morning to talk about the stunning three-game series deficit the team faces. Here’s what they had to say about their own personal production.
Brock Nelson admits frustration
“Yeah, for sure. I think even more frustrating, just given how the games have played out, too. Have to continue to believe that you’re gonna get more looks, and capitalize on them, be a difference maker, and turn it. We had our looks, a couple looks in the second, off the post, changes the game a bit. But shoulda, woulda, coulda, and we are where we’re at right now, and I think it’s just having that belief individually for myself to step up, be more of an impact offensively, and I think as a group the belief that, we were one of the best teams in the league all year. We’re capable of coming back, and obviously just starts with one game at a time.”
Martin Necas is blocking the outside noise
“I don’t honestly look at media at all. So I don’t know what’s going on over there. Obviously, I want to be scoring more, more goals for sure for the team. It starts with tomorrow.”
