Jaslene Massey Shatters State Discus Record at CIF Championships

Aliso Niguel senior Jaslene Massey made headlines at the CIF state track and field championships held at Buchanan High School in Clovis on Saturday, breaking the state record in the discus with an incredible throw of 196 feet and four inches. This remarkable feat not only set a new state benchmark but also marked the longest discus throw ever recorded by a female high school athlete in the United States.

Although the discus event took place on an auxiliary field before the track events began, Massey received a thunderous ovation from the crowd as she celebrated her record-setting achievement. “My goal was to for the gold first, then the mark,” Massey stated. She is set to continue her athletic career at Oregon, where she may also compete in hammer and javelin events. “I always dreamed of this and I wouldn’t be here without my support system,” she added.

After a nail-biting wait for the official measurement, Massey erupted in excitement when the distance was displayed on the scoreboard, exclaiming, “Let’s go! Three more!” She still had three additional throws remaining after her record-setting effort. “I wanted something big and I got something big,” she reflected, having successfully defended her state title and surpassed the previous meet record of 186-9 set by Anna Jelmini in 2009. To further validate her achievement, she followed up with a throw of 192-6 on her final attempt.

In addition to Massey's achievement, Sherman Oaks Notre Dame senior JJ Harel also made history by claiming his second consecutive state title in the boys high jump with a height of 7-2. Harel overcame a rocky start, ultimately clearing 6-11 on his first attempt and securing his victory. “This season was an emotional roller coaster but I know I can get 7-3,” he said, showing determination as he aimed for a new state record.

The championships were filled with noteworthy performances, including Rosary's girls 4x100-meter relay victory and Calabasas junior Malia Rainey’s win in the girls 100 meters. The day showcased the incredible talent of California high school athletes, with several records being challenged and broken throughout the event.
