Jim Schwartz Reflects on Leaving Browns After Coaching Change

Following the Browns' decision to appoint Todd Monken as their new head coach, Jim Schwartz, who served as the team's defensive coordinator, chose to resign. In a recent conversation with Ryan Ripken, Schwartz elaborated on his choice to step down after he was overlooked for the head coaching position when Kevin Stefanski was let go.

“We had a lot of success on defense, and the Browns made a change at head coach, and they passed over me,” Schwartz stated. He pointed out that despite the defensive achievements during his tenure, the organization opted for Monken, an offensive-minded coach. “That was the decision they made. They wanted to go with an offensive guy. They chose Todd. I'm fine with that.”

Schwartz emphasized that being passed over for a promotion after performing well created a challenging situation for him. “When you’re in any business and you think you were in line for that promotion, it’s time to go,” he remarked. He also noted that Monken deserved to bring in his own staff, arguing that a “forced marriage” within the coaching staff would not yield positive results.

He explained, “Having command of the players and having command in a locker room... all those things are extremely important.” Schwartz felt that after being bypassed for the head coach role, he would struggle to fulfill his responsibilities effectively. “It wouldn’t have been good for me, and it wouldn’t have been good for Todd,” he concluded.

Schwartz's departure raises questions about the future dynamics within the Browns, especially regarding star defensive end Myles Garrett. Nevertheless, the organization appears to have gained substantial value for Garrett, who is now 30, a move that may have been more difficult to execute as he ages.
