Knicks’ Jalen Brunson Faces Off Against Spurs’ Stephon Castle in NBA Finals

SAN ANTONIO — Jalen Brunson is preparing for a significant challenge in the NBA Finals, but surprisingly, it isn't the towering Victor Wembanyama he needs to worry about. Instead, the focus is on Stephon Castle, the Spurs' determined point guard, who has been assigned the task of containing Brunson's dynamic play. “I think what’s worked for me is trying to be physical with him,” Castle noted during NBA Finals Media Day on Tuesday. “He’s obviously shorter than me, but he’s a very physical guard... Just trying to impose my will and use my physicality to my advantage.”

Castle has a track record of successfully defending Brunson. Data from Underdog Sports reveals that Brunson has only managed five points on 28.7% shooting when facing Castle over 38 possessions since the Spurs guard entered the league last season. Nevertheless, Brunson has managed to maintain a strong offensive presence against San Antonio, averaging 26.5 points per game this season, including a notable 25-point performance in the NBA Cup Final last December. “He’s great. I think his intensity and tenacity is special,” Brunson remarked. “He’s tough. Something you have to game plan for and just be smart.”

In addition to the on-court battles, there's a personal connection as Brooklyn native Julian Champagnie prepares to face off against his hometown team. “I would love to spoil their plans,” Champagnie said with a grin, acknowledging the friends he has among Knicks fans. He played a crucial role in sending the Spurs to the Finals, scoring 20 points in the decisive Game 7 of the Western Conference Finals against the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Meanwhile, the Knicks are closely monitoring Mitchell Robinson's condition as he deals with a fractured right fifth metacarpal. Listed as questionable for Game 1, Robinson has been participating in individual drills despite wearing protective wrapping on his hand. “I’m about to talk to our medical people to see what he can do today,” Knicks coach Mike Brown commented. Robinson's presence will be vital, particularly against a Spurs team featuring Wembanyama's height and a deep frontcourt.

As the Knicks gear up for Game 1, they remain optimistic yet cautious, taking things one day at a time.
