LaVern Gibson Cross Country Course Receives $2.3 Million Upgrade
The LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course in eastern Vigo County is set to undergo a significant transformation with a $2.3 million investment as it prepares to host two major NCAA events. The course will welcome the 2026 NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships on November 21 and the NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships on November 20, 2027.
Located at 599 S. Tabortown St., the ongoing project includes $1.9 million allocated for building, site, and landscaping improvements, alongside a $348,000 expansion of the irrigation system. According to Karen Dyer, executive director of the Terre Haute Convention and Visitors Bureau, funding for these enhancements derives from the Vigo County innkeeper tax, which is levied at 8 percent on short-term accommodations.
The upgrades are designed to bolster the LaVern Gibson Course's reputation as a premier cross country venue, further establishing Terre Haute’s identity as “Cross Country Town USA.” This sport is a significant contributor to tourism in the Wabash Valley and Indiana, drawing nearly 100,000 visitors annually and resulting in approximately 9,100 hotel room nights in Vigo County each year.
In 2025, seven major weekends at the facility produced a local economic impact of $10 million through spending on lodging, dining, and retail, as reported by the Convention and Visitors Bureau. The upcoming NCAA events are expected to generate an economic boost, with projections of $2.5 to $3 million for the 2026 championships and about $1.2 million for the 2027 Division III championships.
“Cross country is the backbone of our tourism economy here in Vigo County,” Dyer stated. “Outside of large, one-time events like the Terre Haute Air Show, it consistently drives the highest volume of visitors and economic impact year after year.”
The construction, led by engineer Michael Waldbeiser and Keymark Development Inc., aims to modernize the course's functionality with new walkways, a roundabout entrance, and a large fire pit area for athletes and spectators. The master plan also includes a striking sculpture of a running shoe, part of the Art of the Run initiative, to enhance the entry experience and promote the community's identity.
As Terre Haute gears up to host the Division I Cross Country Championships, a series of preliminary races and supporting events will take place during championship week. Jeff Martin, associate head coach at Indiana State University and operations director for the Gibson Course, emphasized the significance of these events for the community. “We’re fortunate to be able to bring events of this magnitude to Vigo County,” Martin remarked, expressing pride in the ongoing partnership with the NCAA.
