Marsch Embraces Challenge of Leading Canada in Historic Home World Cup
Jesse Marsch is poised to guide Canada in their inaugural quest for a World Cup victory as the co-hosts prepare for their opening match against Bosnia-Herzegovina. Speaking at Toronto's BMO Stadium, which will host six matches during the tournament, Marsch expressed his enthusiasm for the opportunity to lead the Canadian team during this pivotal moment in their football history.
"If you do this for a living this is where you want to be," Marsch stated, emphasizing the significance of coaching in a home World Cup. "I came here to lead them in the World Cup, right, in a home World Cup. I wanted this responsibility," he added. Marsch, who previously played for the U.S. national team, was considered for the head coaching position of the U.S. but ultimately took charge of Canada.
Canada has participated in two World Cups prior, in 1986 and 2022, but has yet to secure a win, losing all six matches played. This year, however, optimism runs high with a squad featuring several players from top European leagues. Nevertheless, Marsch confirmed that star player Alphonso Davies from Bayern Munich will not compete against Bosnia due to a hamstring injury, although recent MRI results show promising signs of recovery.
In Davies' absence, Stephen Eustaquio will serve as captain for the historic match, marking the first World Cup game held in Canada. "It's a dream come true," said Eustaquio, who plays for Los Angeles FC in Major League Soccer.
Marsch addressed concerns regarding the pressure faced by his team, which is expected to advance beyond the group stage for the first time. He reassured that the atmosphere within the squad has been stable, stating, "There wasn't really a need for big mental and psychological messages. We're all aware of the World Cup. We're all aware of it being at home. We're all excited."
Bosnia-Herzegovina, which recently qualified for its second World Cup after defeating Italy, will enter the match as the underdog. Coach Sergej Barbarez acknowledged the challenges ahead but noted that his team has experience competing against higher-ranked nations, saying, "the road (to the tournament) was by no means easy."
