Mason West's Future Uncertain After Major WHL Trade
Mason West, a promising talent for Michigan State hockey, has made headlines following a significant trade in the Western Hockey League. The 6-foot-6 forward hails from Edina, Minnesota, and was picked 29th overall in the 2025 NHL Entry Draft by the Chicago Blackhawks.
After completing his high school career at Edina High School, West spent the past year playing for the Fargo Force in the USHL. While there is ambiguity regarding whether he will join the Spartans for the 2026-27 season or the following year, indications suggest he may make his way to East Lansing this fall.
In a strategic move, the Portland Winterhawks have acquired West's rights through a trade with the Vancouver Giants, which involved a first-round and a seventh-round draft pick. This contingency ensures that if West's plans with Michigan State do not materialize, he will have an opportunity to compete in the WHL.
Spartan supporters are optimistic that West will choose to play at Michigan State and avoid the WHL route altogether, with hopes set on his arrival this upcoming season.
